One of the simplest projects you can do for digital design class is a 7-segment display with a 7447 decoder driver. The students are introduced on how binary coded decimal is actually designed as you use the segments display.
The experiment below also discussed the use of resistors which limits the flow of current going to the circuit. It will also help the student how to read resistor color coding in determining its resistor values in ohms.
