I often get a request from my former students to be as their reference when prospective employers ask for it. Some even request to prepare them a resume format that will surely be read and eventually considered for hiring.
There is no sure fire hit format in preparing resume that gets read. But there are dozens often acceptable outlines job recruiters consider depending on the professional experience you have.
I’m no expert in preparing and evaluating resumes. What I can share is my own experience and few successes I had in the past when I was still starting my career and looking for a job.
Here’s the outline I prefer:
1. Your name on the top page. This should be the top header of your resume. Include your address, telephone land line number, mobile number, and e-mail address.
2. Career Objective. You should state here your idea on what particular job interests you.
3. Education. Include only your bachelor’s degree. Most employers and headhunters have no interest and do not give bearing on where you have obtained your primary and secondary schooling. State when you graduated and the name of institution you obtained your college diploma.
4. Project/Technical Experience. This is commonly omitted by applicant’s resume. Recruiters are very particular on what you can do to the organization. Your resume should give information that may gauge on how you will fit for the job. You should include the title and brief description of the project/s, when it was done or implemented and your participation on the activities (e.g. Consultant, programmer, designer, analyst, member)
5. Organizations/Club Memberships. This creates an impression that you actively participated in the advancement of your career as well as advocacy to push groups cause to better the industry on where you belong. Cite if you are a member or an officer of the organization.
6. Personal Data. Include here your social security, tax identification numbers, height, weight, gender.
Sample Resume for Newly Graduate
Should you include your religion in the resume? Am I required to attach a picture? My former colleague of mine, Engineer Mark Montano, said that you should never include religious affiliation that may cause biases on the part of the recruiter. You don’t like to be omitted on the list because of your faith, do you?
How about picture? Why not? As long as you are Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt look-alike, post it.
Unless it is being asked to include on your resume, on my opinion, you should not include it. This again will cause biases. If need be, invest to have a good picture.
Make your resume concise: 1 or 2 pages only.
Do you have something in mind that I forgot to include? Let me know, please.
Good luck!
